On June 24, the Copyright Office announced the launch of its new Copyright Public Records System (CPRS), replacing the prior Online Public Catalog. This new system enhances public access to copyright registration and recordation data, offering advanced search capabilities, improved interfaces, and user-friendly navigation tools.
CPRS is part of the Office’s broader Enterprise Copyright System (ECS) initiative and has been in pilot testing since December 2020. Feedback from users and industry professionals has helped shape the continuous improvements and refinements seen in the final version.
This comprehensive system provides robust access to copyright information from 1978 to the present, alongside searchable metadata for over 3.8 million historical copyright registrations from 1898 through 1945. The Copyright Office plans regular updates, continually expanding the system’s scope and records.
CPRS is an essential tool for creators, businesses, legal professionals, and anyone seeking reliable information on copyright registrations and intellectual property protections. It simplifies copyright research, verification, and management, helping to protect creative works and intellectual property rights.
