Leonard Monfredo thrives in complex, high-stakes environments and has litigated patent disputes in nearly all major venues, including more than twenty U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeals Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Although formally trained in the life sciences—including several years spent conducting genetics research at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions—Mr. Monfredo is experienced with a broad range of technologies, comprising not only biologics and small-molecule drugs but also: Wi-Fi, MPEG-DASH, liquid crystal displays, network security, healthcare IT, spinal implant devices, geolocation systems, and semiconductor fabrication equipment, among others.
As a pro bono advocate, Mr. Monfredo has successfully defended undocumented minors in immigration court removal proceedings, and he has represented indigent capital defendants in post-conviction appeals in various state and federal courts.
Beyond the courtroom, Mr. Monfredo counsels clients on intellectual property licensing and monetization, assists startups with investor pitches, market analyses, and launch strategies, and has advised on multiple non-IP contract negotiations. Mr. Monfredo is also the co-founder of KIP for Change, a non-profit organization that helps to prevent both short-term and generational homelessness.
Now based in Seattle, Mr. Monfredo began his career in New York City with Fish & Richardson P.C., the largest patent litigation firm in the U.S., and Paul Hastings LLP, a Vault top-20 law firm.
